What installation option is right for me?

Trailer -Wired

The 'Trailer-Wired' model functions identically, except it is spliced directly into your trailer's wiring. This means that when you connect your trailer to your vehicle, you simply plug the trailer cable into your tow vehicle's socket as you would normally. This installation results in less external visible cables which provides a sleeker look. This option is popular with customers using an installer.

Plug & Play

For the quickest and easiest install choose the 'Plug & Play' model. The wiring in this model is pre-configured in an external adaptor which means all you need to do is affix it onto your trailer and simply plug in to your tow vehicle's socket. This option is popular with customers who are installing the unit themselves.

FAQs

What happens if Bluetooth drops out?

Elecbrakes searches at 2/100th of a second. The unit will reconnect, however the loss of Bluetooth connectivity does not impact the ability of the trailer to brake. Elecbrakes always brakes the trailer and will continue to work at the last configuration set. As long as you put your foot on the brake pedal in the car, the
Elecbrakes unit will brake.

What trailers can Elecbrakes work with?

The brake controller will work on all trailers up to 4500kg ATM* that have electric or electric over hydraulic braking systems. This includes but is not limited to caravans, camper trailers, toy haulers, tradie trailers, equipment hire trailers, agricultural trailers, car trailers, boat trailers and horse floats.
Using the tow vehicles standard / existing wiring / circuitry wiring or plug setup Elecbrakes supports braking on single and
dual axles trailers, with all wheels braked.

*New Zealand 3.500kg ATM

Why do I need to drive with my lights turned on?

All brake controllers require a constant power source. Being trailer mounted Elecbrakes uses the vehicles lighting circuits for this. Activating the headlights to park or full beam is also powering the taillights. This is the Elecbrakes
constant power source.

Is the Bluetooth connection safe?

If I drive past someone else with Elecbrakes, are they going to control my brakes?
No, they won’t. Elecbrakes is safe, and it locks the connection - Bluetooth x Unit - with only one device. For example: I’ve got the app on my phone, and it’s connected to my unit. , you won’t be able to connect the remote as well. You will need to disconnect the app and connect the remote.
Can I control the brakes app and the remote at the same time?
The answer is no. You can’t. This is a safety feature. You need to disconnect the app, and you will be able to use the remote.

Do I need to buy a unit & an adaptor?

Yes, the unit needs an adaptor to connect to the vehicle and the trailer. The adaptors are sold separately, so customers can get the right adaptor suited to their car and trailer. We also offer these as a package deal. You just need to check the plug on your car 7 the plug on your trailer & pick the combination needed.

What happens if I have no data or internet connection.

Will Elecbrakes still work? Yes it will. Elecbrakes uses the trailers wiring circuit when connected to the tow vehicle for its power. The Bluetooth connection allows for the settings to be changed, but not on braking the trailer.

Can I use a vehicle with an in car controller when Elecbrakes is mounted to the trailer?

We recommend using Elecbrakes as it's been fine-tuned to that trailer. If the plug and play adaptor is connected then the in car controller will not get its signal to the brakes on the
trailer. We have engineered the adaptor so that only the Elecbrakes controller will apply trailer brakes.

Will Elecbrakes work with vehicles using a CANBUS system?

Yes it will. Many vehicles these days operate a CANBUS system. The sensitivity of CANBUS when testing the circuits may see the power supply cut to the trailer if it detects a fault like a short, or it sees the low current draw of LED lights on the trailer as a fault. If it does this then it may turn off the taillight power. In the event that it is sensitive when using Elecbrakes we recommend having auxiliary power connected to pin 2 or pin 9 on the vehicles socket. Elecbrakes adaptors are wired to channel this source to the Elecbrakes unit. Standard wiring on vehicles with a 12 pin flat plug fitted at the towbar should have power standard on Pin 9

Can Elecbrakes be used on trailers with triaxle trailers?

Yes it can. However there are some very important requirements when using in this situation. The Elecbrakes unit must be used with the TWL(Trailer Wired Leader) and hardwired into the trailers wiring circuit. An auxiliary power source must be supplied from the tow vehicle at 12v 30amp. The headlight(BROWN Wire) circuit MUST NOT be connected at all as it is not rated with a sufficient amp supply to support 6 magnets. Elecbrakes can provide the standard wiring guide for tri axle trailers.

If you are purchasing an Elecbrakes unit to use with your boat trailer, please read the FAQs first with notes on the Boat Questions: FAQs & User Manuals

*NFC compatible phone required. Otherwise you can connect via the Google/Apple app.
