What Are Shocks and Dampers? Shock Absorbers Explained

Shock absorbers are one of the most important purchases for performance, comfort and overall enjoyability when it comes to modifying your 4X4. They are what takes the kinetic energy from bumps in the road, cornering forces or off-road obstacles acting on your suspension and turn it into thermal energy which is then released into the atmosphere. Essentially, they play a huge role in controlling your ride quality, handling and off-road capability.

However, there is a huge variance with suspension dampers in terms of price, quality, characteristics and even operation. A factory shock is likely going to be very different than a quality aftermarket unit, just like a cheap shock will not offer the assurance and dependability of a high quality product.

How Do Shock Absorbers Work?

We could write a textbook's worth of info on this subject, but in order to avoid extraneous detail we'll try to keep things in as broad terms as possible. Basically, a shock absorber has a cylindrical body that has an internal piston moving up and down inside it in conjunction with the bumps in the terrain.

The shock body also holds an amount of shock absorber fluid that dampens the up and down movement of the piston, turning the kinetic energy into heat, which it then releases through the shock body.

How quickly the piston moves up into the shock body (compression) and how quickly it extends down out of the body (rebound) is controlled by internal valves which allow fluid to move around the piston, either at a fixed or variable rate. This process is referred to as 'valving'.

Many shocks also incorporate a gas into the shock body. These are called an emulsion shock. There are also twin-tube bodies, mono-tube, and remote reservoir shock absorbers, all of which we'll cover below.

Shocks and springs should ideally be matched in their rates of travel to maintain vehicle control, however the spring is more to carry weight, and provide the initial dampening force during cornering or over rough terrain, whereas shocks are more about smoothing the wheel travel and body roll out to maintain ride comfort, handling and to prevent you from being thrown around your rig's cab on the rocks.

In essence the springs provide the travel, the shocks control the travel.


Why Quality Dampers are Vital for 4WD Performance

One of the problems facing 4WDers a few decades back when modifying their rigs for larger tyres and more wheel travel became popular, was that on-road handling often suffered as a result.

These days, suspension technology has come a long way, and even with a sizeable lift you can still maintain your vehicle's on-road manners.

A large part of that is the shocks. With the right quality dampers, you maintain tyre-to-road contact, which actually improves braking and cornering over stock.

But most of us invest in our suspension for off-roading, right? Take just about any touring trip in the country. Chances are you're going to be running over some pretty rough dirt roads or corrugations along the way. This is the stuff that kills standard shocks.

The rapid movements of the suspension at speed transmits a lot of heat through your shock fluid, to the point it can become overwhelmed and not dissipate the heat fast enough. When this happens, it's called shock fade and they lose almost all of their ability to dampen the undulations. A harsh ride, wallowy handling and large amounts of brake dive can occur, making the drive much more dangerous.

Different Types of 4WD Shock Absorbers

There are a few different types of shock. Here are the main ones and which type you should choose for your 4WD.

Twin-Tube Shocks

As the name suggests, twin-tube shock absorbers have an inner tube, where the piston moves in and out, and a second outer tube, which acts as an extra fluid reservoir - the more fluid a shock can hold, the better it can dissipate heat.

Twin-tube shocks are a great cost-effective entry point for daily drivers and light-duty off-roading. If you use your rig as a commuter and for the occasional camping trip to the beach, these could be a great option.

However, they do have a limited cooling capacity and sustained hard or heavy-duty use can quickly overwhelm the shock's ability to radiate the heat build-up effectively. If that sounds like you, you should be looking at a more efficient design.

Monotube Shocks

Again, the name sort of says what it does. A monotube shock has a single tube that houses the piston and the fluid. While it does have less fluid than an equivalent length twin-tube shock, it radiates heat more efficiently and can have external reservoirs added to increase the fluid volume.

They offer very consistent damping over a variety of terrains, with some brands including external manual valve adjustment, via an adjuster knob on the shock body, and extended lengths to offer more wheel travel.

These shocks are by far the most popular design and quality units represent a high-value upgrade for frequent off-road driving over the factory dampers.

Remote Reservoir Shocks

These are monotube shocks with an external fluid reservoir that increases the overall shock fluid capacity, damping ability and performance over rough terrain. The more fluid contained within the shock, the better it performs over longer distances and harsher conditions. As such, the remote reservoirs are a premium investment for those who tow heavy loads at high speeds through the outback or those looking to drive the A-grade trails.

The reservoirs themselves are often finned for even greater cooling capacity. The increased surface area and fluid are both critical in preventing shock fade and keeping performance consistent and the handling of your rig at a maximum and safe level.


When Should You Upgrade Your Shocks and Dampers?

The problem with running worn shocks off-road is the compromises in safe handling. It's not just on corners or high speed dirt either. A badly worn set of shocks can offer poor rebound dampening, so the stored kinetic energy in your springs can actually push you into a rollover situation.

Or with poor performance under compression the suspension can bottom out more readily, increasing wear and tear on the suspension and driveline and generally just making the interior ride comfort next to non-existent.

Even things like adding accessories can affect shock performance. Extra vehicle weight from bullbars, winches, drawers and rooftop tents will increase leverage on the suspension and your shocks must be able to handle the extra load.

That's why suspension is often the last thing to be modified when building an off-road rig, so all the weight can be adequately accounted for.

Shocks, much like the other parts of the suspension, are also wearable components.

If your shocks are leaking shock fluid or the bodies have been dented while four-wheel driving, it's probably time for a refresh or upgrade. A quick visual inspection after each trip is highly recommended.
